Knox College Pre-Wedding Photos // Karen & Walker

Hidden Gem Photo Location in Downtown Toronto

As a Toronto wedding photographer, I always get asked what my favourite venues to shoot at are in the city. And I always have to really think about it because there are just so many different venues for different styles and tastes. And one of the places I always liked but didn’t have the chance to shoot at was Knox College on the University of Toronto campus.

So when Karen and Walker mentioned they wanted to do their pre-wedding photos at Knox College, I was truly looking forward to it. A pre-wedding photo session is similar to an engagement session, but you come in wedding outfits instead (it doesn’t have to be your actual wedding dress, and you can rent beautiful gowns from various places). You can mix it up with an outfit change with a more casual outfit as well, like a traditional engagement session.

Tucked quietly within the University of Toronto campus, Knox College feels like a secret you stumble upon rather than a landmark you plan for – and that’s part of the magic. The stone façade, arched doorways, and intimate courtyard delivers old-world charm that is timeless.

As a photographer, light is everything – and Knox College delivers. The way the light comes through the windows on the grand staircase and through the stained glass windows on the second floor hallway makes everything feel cinematic and romantic.

The only downside about taking photos here? You need a paid permit. However, I truly think it is worth it especially as an option for portraits for your wedding photos since it provides both outdoor and indoor options (where indoor options can be quite rare in Toronto as a back up plan in case of rain).

Toronto Waterfront Engagement Session // Rosanna & Alex Document Love

Toronto Waterfront Engagement Session

{Playful Engagement Photos Downtown & by the Lake}

When it comes to engagement/document love sessions, I’m a huge proponent for couples to plan the session around who they are and what they love. That way years later when they look back at these mementoes, the photos can remind them of their life together at that point in time. For Rosanna and Alex’s Toronto waterfront engagement session, they wanted it to feel like they are just on a date or exploring like when they are travelling. The vibe is playful and modern.

We met up in Yorkville and got gelato – perfect for the warm summer day! Then we just ambled around the area before making our way to Cherry Beach. We ended the session with the Toronto skyline in our background as the evening sets in.

Rosanna & Alex are getting married next week, and I can’t wait to be a part of their special day to capture more precious memories!

Rosanna’s gorgeous tulle skirt is from Bluish (local Canadian talent!)

Iceland Engagement Photography // Kayla & Nate

Iceland engagement photography

When Kayla contacted me at the end of September about her and Nate’s engagement photography session in Iceland, I was incredibly excited despite the fact that this would be my fourth time in the country. I always feel like a kid in a candy store coming here. When my flight landed, and I went through the familiar Keflavik airport, hopped on the flybus and got into the city, everything felt so familiar & warm to me in a way that even coming “home” to Canada does not make me feel. I joked to Mike that maybe I was Icelandic in my past life.

The way Kayla & Nate met is stuff for the movies – they are six years apart and Kayla was in a relationship when they first met, and Nate had just gone through a breakup. A few years later,  a chance encounter and a facebook message led to their first date and the rest was history. The day of our session came, we met up before the sun came up as this time of the year, daylight hours are short and drove out into the countryside. We explored a few places along the south coast, including the famous Black Sand beach Reynisfjara, Dyrholaey peninsula and a couple of waterfalls. They were troopers and braved the strong wind and the chilly temperatures (they are from southern California so the weather was definitely a bit of a shock) and were up for anything – even going behind Seljalandsfoss with a super icy path and going up to the top of Skogafoss.

Thanks Kayla & Nate, for inviting me to Iceland to document your love! It was a pleasure and I’m so grateful for the opportunity. Here are some of my favourites from our little adventure.

Venice Honeymoon Portrait Session // Hieu & Alex

Venice wedding photographer
This romantic Venice honeymoon portrait session has been featured on UK wedding blog Want That Wedding, as well as on Brides Without Borders.

In July I photographed a Venice honeymoon portrait session for Hieu and Alex. Hieu and Alex are from the U.S. (Georgia and San Fran). They were on a 3-week honeymoon in Europe and Venice, Italy was one of their stops.

I was in Europe for 3 weeks myself for a couple of weddings and Venice was my first stop. It had been 5 years since I last visited Venice and I was very much looking forward to my second visit.  I think a lot of people who have been to Venice love it. There are also those who think it’s overrated. The complaints I often hear are: it’s too touristy; it’s not authentic; things cost too much. But I think most “touristy” places are touristy for reason. I don’t think those places are at fault just because everyone want to visit. Yes Venice can be crowded, yes it can feel less like an authentic city compared to other places, but there is more than a thousand years of history that took place in this city built on water. Every canal, every calle, every brick has a story, and I believe all those stories have left invisible marks on the city. You can’t see them, but you can feel them.

We woke up really early for this honeymoon session since July in Venice is quite hot and humid. So we decided to start just after sunrise. It was a more reasonable temperature and it was also before the crowds attacked the city :) We started in their hotel, then we walked over the Rialto bridge, wandered through some small lanes (calles) to Piazza San Marco and ended it with a gondola ride!

High Park Engagement Photos // Amy & Henry

High park engagement photos

They say that “birds of a feather flock together”. Well, I think proverbs really do express a truth that is based on common sense or real experience. The first thing that I learned about Amy and Henry was that they love to travel.

Well, you had me at “travel”. When we met, we just talked about their travels. I can honestly say that is one topic that I’ll never get tired of talking about. It was also very apparent to me how in love they are with each other. This made it very easy to capture their connection during this Document Love/engagement session.

Amy & Henry, I can’t wait to be a part of your wedding day in June!

Iceland Portrait Photography // Gita & Matt

Iceland engagement photographer

If you’ve been to my site before, you know about my love of Iceland. So when Gita contacted me about photographing  an anniversary portrait session in Iceland for her and Matt, I almost fell off my chair.  When we met, we just chatted away about travel. I learned that we share the same love for travelling, new experiences and the open road. I also learned that they’d be celebrating 14 years of marriage at the beginning of September. So the trip to Iceland was pretty special. September couldn’t come soon enough for all of us.

I often get asked what I think is the most important thing to consider when working with a photographer. And at meetings, I always get asked questions like what kind of camera I use, whether I use Nikon or Canon, etc etc. While those questions are legitimate questions, I think the most important thing is whether you feel a connection to your photographer and their work. Working with a photographer is like making friends, if you have a connection with them, it’ll be a much more rewarding working relationship. Because photography isn’t just a product, and what your photographer tries to capture isn’t just what the eyes can see.

Thank you Gita & Matt, for bringing me to Iceland to document this milestone in your life and for trusting me to do it.
