Godwick Great Barn Wedding // Grace & Danny

Boho & Rustic Wedding | Norfolk, England

Last summer I had the opportunity to second shoot with the awesome Rik Pennington while I was in the United Kingdom for a couple of weeks. Rik is an incredibly talented photographer who has an amazing grasp for light and composition. I had a great time second shooting with him for Grace & Danny’s heartwarming and beautiful Godwick Great Barn wedding.

As an introvert, I can be a bit slow to warm up to people. But when I met Grace & Danny for the first time the day before their wedding, they welcomed me so warmly with open arms, literally. As a photographer, I always try to find the aspects of my subjects that make them shine – qualities that make them who they are. That can be hard when you meet someone for the first time, but Grace & Danny’s warm welcome instantly made that easy. And on the day of the wedding, you could easily feel the sense of community and of family. A wedding isn’t just a celebration of romantic love, it’s a celebration of togetherness in all its forms.

Grace & Danny’s wedding had a lot of lovely details, a lot of which were handmade. It was a true labour of love. But what I’ll carry with me from that day aren’t those details, but the love they showed each other, and to their friends and family and vice versa. Grace, Danny, and of course, Rik – thank you so much for having me! Here’s the story from that wonderful day.

Destination Wedding Photographer // Travelling to Europe 2015

Destination Wedding Photographer

If you’ve been to my site before or know me personally, you know about my love of travelling. I love exploring new places and new cultures, seeing everything through new eyes, with a sense of wonder. Traveling forces you to focus & connect with the present and just stay in the moment. You are reminded that life can be simple again. So I love destination weddings as well. Every time I come back from a trip, I’m left wanting more. So next year I’m going to be a free range photographer for a few months :)

I’m going to be in Europe (and potentially Asia) from August to December, 2015. If you or anyone you know will be getting married or would like to document some memories, I’d love to hear from you!

Travelogue // Santorini Photography

What to say about Santorini?! Other than that it’s heaven-on-earth? granted, crowded heaven-on-earth (from June to August)…but still, there is simply no place quite like it. It’s the sheer cliffs (caused by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago) on one side of the island, the impossibly blue ocean, the iconic Greek isles architecture with white walls and blue domed churches, and of course, the sunsets, where people erupt into cheers and clap at the end (I am serious).

Usually I find myself going on and on about a place, but strangely this time, I have very few words. So I will just let the photos do the talking.

Warning, I’m generally more of a dog person, but you might see quite a few cats in this post.

Sunrise from up in the air.

It was worth the overnight at Athens airport haha.

Atlantis Books. Officially my favourite bookstore in the world.

If you are a book lover, how amazing would it be to get married here?!

Sonia & Dave: Mayan Riviera Mexico Wedding // Destination Wedding Photography

Sonia & Dave had a colourful and beautiful Mayan Riviera Mexico wedding at the Azul Sensatori at the end of May. They met in Whistler, BC in 2009 through Dave’s brother and Sonia’s good friend. Dave fell instantly for the gorgeous and bubbly Sonia on that wintry evening. Two and half years later, they returned to Whistler and that’s when Dave proposed. So four and a years after they first met, they brought their friends & family from all around the world to a beach in the Mayan Riviera to celebrate the beginning of their marriage.

A HUGE thanks to my friend Sara of Sara Wilde Photography for bringing me along!! Thanks for letting me be your sidekick :) Check out Sara’s blog for more photos!

Here’s the story of Sonia & Dave’s wedding day.

‘Doli’ or the bride-send-off-ceremony was a particularly emotional ritual. It got Sara and I teared up as well.

2013 // A Year in Photos

Dear 2013,

What a year you have been. I always feel extra nostalgic at the end of each year and the beginning of a new one. Reminiscing about the things that happened, what dreams did I achieve, what memories did I make? A little less than a year ago, I handed in my resignation and left my full time day job in order to follow my passion for photography, and for the stories they tell. It wasn’t so much a scary time, but an uncertain time. The scary part happened when I contemplated the possibility of being a full time wedding and portrait photographer. Once I made up my mind about it, it wasn’t so scary anymore because it seemed possible. Possible but still so full of uncertainty. I pushed through that though, and focused myself, one day at a time, one session at a time, one wedding at a time. Making goals, checking off to-do lists, trying to maintain some balance in life during the busy summer & fall months, and trying to not get lost in the operation of my business and keep those big dreams in sight.

There were a lot of ups.Working with amazing couples and families who understood my vision, shared that vision and trusted me to document their story in the form of photographs; shooting my first, and then my second destination wedding (those are coming soon!); running a profitable business in my first year full time; but most of all, waking up everyday and not regretting or dreading going to work. That feeling, that was how I knew I was definitely doing something right.

There were frustrations and disappointments too. Lessons learned the hard way, and heartaches. But I also worked through them, a lot of times with the help of my amazingly supportive husband, and some really awesome friends. Perhaps one of the most interesting aspect for me has been adjusting to working from home. all. the. time. I really struggle with a self-imposed schedule, not to mention it gets lonely! This Oatmeal comic explains it all. :)

So many things I have learned. How to let it go when it’s not in your control; how to walk away when I’m too emotional to respond to an email; the realization that some things we need to learn and relearn constantly, not everything is like learning to ride a bike; the importance of saying ‘no’; the importance of carving out time for myself, to rest and to stay inspired; the importance of finding my own way and staying true to it.

I’m not a big New-Year’s-resolution kind of person, but one of my biggest goals for 2014 is to push myself to dare to dream bigger, to continue living with love, intention and purpose, and to find a way to give back to the community.

Thank you 2013.

2014, let’s do this!

Love, me.

But what’s an year-end review without some photos? Here are some highlights, favourite moments, favourite photos. Wishing you a year full of love, laughter, great food, moments that you will never forget, and adventures.

Photography Dream List

Ever since I read The Alchemist, I believed that when you want something with all your heart, the entire universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. One of my great dreams is to combine my love of travel with photography, so here’s a list of places where I’d love to photograph a wedding, in no particular order. I hope that in uttering them out loud, they will one day become reality.

–       Paris. Enough said :)

–       on a beach (anywhere!), at sunset

–       Nova Scotia, on the coast, maybe Cape Breton?

–       Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland

–       A vineyard wedding, in France

–       An elopement (how sweet would that be? …ok this isn’t a place, but an elopement to somewhere wonderful and quiet would be amazing)

–       A backyard wedding, lovingly handmade with DIY details

–       Somewhere in the south of France: the colours, the sun, the hilltop villages, oh my!

–       The Highlands of Scotland, or an island

–       a Caribbean island

–       Havana, Cuba: the colours, the architecture, the people

–       A proposal-session (this one is for the extra thoughtful guys out there!)

–       Iceland – the hauntingly beautiful landscape

–       A little island somewhere in Italy, like Lipari

–       Bali, Indonesia

–       Venice, Italy: there is simply no other city on earth like Venice

–       Costa Rica

–       Seville, Spain

–       Banff or Jasper National Park

–       Old Town Dubrovnik, Croatia

–       Lake District, England

If you or anyone you know is planning on getting married and can help me check off one of these dreams from my list, please do get in touch! :)

Note: Ok, I see a theme here: I’m definitely attracted to nature with amazing landscape, architecture, and history.
